HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 165i RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE "RUN ON WATER" FOR CHILDREN'S ORTHEPEDIC HOSPITAL RESOLUTION 165 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF MEDINA PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF APRIL 29 - MAY 5, 1984 AS OPENING DAY WEE-K. WHEREAS, "Opening Day" started in 1908 when Seattle Yacht Club boats greeted President Theodore Roosevelt's "Great White Fleet"; and WHEREAS, "Opening Day" includes all boaters, members of all Puget Sound Yacht Clubs, including Royal Victoria and Royal Vancouver Yacht Clubs of Canada; and WHEREAS, "Opening Day" is one of the last free civic events for spectators, parade participants and log boom boats; and WHEREAS, the Opening Day Premier SK Race is scheduled May 5, 1984 from Medina via the Evergreen Floating Bridge to Husky Stadium; and WHEREAS, yachts will be decorated to the theme of "Golden Oppor- tunities" and participating in a gala parade through the Mortlake Cut at 12 Noon on May 5, 1984; and WHEREAS, races will be held in the Montlake Cut by west coast college crews and the U.S. Olympic Women's Crew; and WHEREAS, our local Olympic medalists and national athletes will be honored during the boat parade; and WHEREAS, the Seattle Downtown Business Association and the sur- rounding areas will be decorating their businesses to the theme of Opening Day; and WHEREAS, upwards to 3,000 boats and 100,000 spectators participate in Opening Day; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Medina, does endorse the week of April 29 - May 5, 1984 as Opening Day Week in recognition of the civic interest and involvement in the tradition of Opening Day and its contribution to the Boating Capitol of the World.
