HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 275RESOLUTION NO. 275 A resolution of the City Council of the City of Medina, Washington, relating to Ordinances Number 699 and 706 which imposed a moratorium on the demolition of buildings of historical significance, adopting findings of fact and approving continuation of the moratorium through May 20, 2001. WHEREAS, the Medina City Council adopted Ordinance Number 699 on November 20, 2000, imposing a moratorium on the demolition of buildings of historic significance through January 8, 2001, and WHEREAS, the Medina City Council adopted Ordinance Number 706 on January 8, 2001, extending the moratorium on the demolition of buildings of historic significance through May 20, 2001, and WHEREAS, Washington State Law, RCW 35A.63.220, requires that a public hearing be held on the moratorium and that the Council adopt findings of fact justifying the moratorium, and WHEREAS, a public hearing on the issue of the moratorium on the demolition of buildings of historic significance was conducted on January 22, 2001, following appropriate notice, now, therefore, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MEDINA, WASHINGTON, does adopt the following findings of fact: 1. The area now contained within the City of Medina was the first area to be significantly populated by settlers on the east side of Lake Washington. 2. The Medina City Hall is the former site of the ferry dock used for access by residents of Medina and adjoining neighborhoods. The Medina Grocery was built in 1908 a short distance from the ferry dock to provide service for ferry passengers and the people living in the Medina area. 3. The Medina City Hall and the Medina Grocery exemplify the architecture of the period in which they were constructed and the exterior facades exemplifying this architectural style have been maintained intact. 4. The Medina City Mall and the Medina Grocery have long been declared to be buildings of historical significance in Medina's Comprehensive Plans. 5. The Medina City Hall and the Medina Grocery have been declared to be of historical significance by Resolution 274 of the City Council on November 20, 2000. 6. The protection and perpetuation of buildings of historic significance within the City of Medina is necessary to maintain the culture, civic pride and general welfare of the people of the City of Medina. 7. The Medina City Hall and the Medina Grocery are listed in the King County Resource Inventory. 8. The City Council desires to establish a historic preservation program and finds that it is necessary to declare a brief moratorium to allow full, public consideration of such a program prior to its adoption. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MEDINA, WASHINGTON, does resolve as follows: RESOLVED that the moratorium on the demolition of buildings of historic significance established in Ordinance Number 699 and Ordinance Number 706 shall continue for the period of time set forth in Ordinance Number 706.
