PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, recreational boating is a popular activity in the many lakes and streams in and
around Medina; and
WHEREAS, the Coast Guard estimates that human error accounts for 70 percent of all boating
accidents and that life jackets could prevent nearly 85 percent of boating fatalities;
and
WHEREAS, through basic boating safety procedures -carrying lifesaving emergency distress and
communications equipment, wearing life jackets, attending safe boating courses,
participating in free boat safety checks, and staying sober when navigating -we can
help ensure boaters on America's coastal, inland, and offshore waters stay safe
throughout the season; and
WHEREAS, on average, 600 people die each year in boating related accidents in the U.S., with
the vast majority of those accidents caused by human error and poor judgment and
not by the boat, equipment, or environmental factors; and
WHEREAS, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives by drowning each year would be
alive today had they worn their life jackets; and
WHEREAS, the City of Medina is bounded by Lake Washington shoreline; and
WHEREAS, a large number of Medina's residents of all ages engage in recreational boating; and
WHEREAS, the mission of United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Division 2, overseeing Medina, is
to promote and improve recreational boating safety by teaching boating safety
courses and conducting vessel safety checks.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jessica Rossman, Mayor of City of Medina, Washington, and on behalf of the
City Council, do hereby proclaim the week of May 22-28, 2021 as
SAFE BOATING and PADDLING WEEK
And encourage all of Medina's residents to dedicate themselves to learning about and practicing
safe boating, including wearing life jackets.
