Subject: Burglaries
Jeff, With over three years on the council and monthly briefings by you and your
predecessor on crime in Medina, I have never heard either of you mention burglaries were
on the rise. Now I am hearing that there is an increase in burglaries but I don't know if
it is: a rumor, a spike or rash of burglaries or a real crime trend in our town. Like any
good councilmember, I need crime data which presumably you have to form an opinion.
Please send me the last five years of burglary data points on a monthly basis and any
breakouts you might have - <$250 or >$250 or whatever you use, so I can gather the raw
data. Thanks, Drew

MAIL THEFTS OCCUR OVER HOLIDAY WEEKEND
On Monday, January P, Medina Officers recovered nearly 10 lbs of mail left behind by
unknown person(s) that prowled the city over the holiday weekend. Between Saturday,
December 31 St and Monday, January P, at least 19 residents were victimized.
A clear garbage bag full of mail was recovered in the 8000 block of NE 16th Street and
another large pile was found on the side of Evergreen Point Road in the 3600 block. Mail
recovered was addressed to homes generally in the area of the 1800 to the 3600 block of
Evergreen Point road, the 7600 to 8000 block of NE 8th, 10th and 12th Streets, as well as a
home in the Medina Heights area and other mail from Bellevue. As no first class mail
was recovered, it appears as though the suspect(s) sifted through the mail to remove first
class items, leaving the `junk mail' behind. Mail thieves target first class mail in hopes of
gathering personal identifying information which can be used to open other accounts
created under the victim's name. Medina Police have increased patrols in the area and
are working in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Inspector.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS:
If possible, have your mail sent to a Post Office Box, or invest in a locking
mailbox.
• Be vigilant about checking your mail soon after it is delivered. If you will be out
of town, request the Post Office hold your mail until you return.

alarm in the 3100 block of Hunts Point Circle. Upon arrival, Officers located wet
footprints on the back deck in front of double doors. Although the doors were locked, it
appears as though pushing on the doors allowed enough movement to activate the alarm.

`PHISHING' SCAM
The Medina Police Department has confirmed that residents in Medina and the surrounding
community are receiving 'phish' emails from internet scammers hoping to gain access to your
personal and financial information.
Here is an example of how this scam works:
You receive an email that appears to be sent from the Security Department of your bank. The
email notifies you that there may be a security issue concerning your account, and in order to
regain access to your account, you need to click on a link to verify your information. Once you
click on the link, you are taken to a website that appears to be legitimate, and you are prompted to
fill in fields with your information.
Although the website you are viewing may appear to be from a legitimate financial institution, in
reality it is a look -alike web page designed to trick you into divulging information that identity
thieves use to charge purchases and open other fraudulent accounts.
For more information about 'Phishing', including tips from the Federal Trade Commission on
how to protect yourself from becoming a victim, visit the Medina Police Department website at
www.medina-wa.gov and select the Police Department link on the left side of the homepage.
Once opened, choose 'Crime Prevention', then select the link on the lower left for ' What is

MORNING INTRUDER
On February 4, 2005 at 6:00 a.m., a homeowner out for an early morning run returned to his
driveway in the 600 block of 8 1 " Avenue NE to encounter a black male with light complexion,
between 20-30 years of age, approximately 5'-7" to 5'-9" in height, medium build wearing dark
colored clothing to include a hooded sweatshirt underneath a shortjacket. Upon challenge by the
homeowner, the black male cursed at him and then disappeared on foot heading toward Overlake
Drive West. Officers were notified of the possible car prowler and responded into the area within
moments of receiving the 911 call. A thorough area search was conducted but the suspect was
not located.
Initially the homeowner did not believe the suspect had committed a crime against his property
but a couple of hours later, determined the black male had actually made entry into his residence.
When the homeowner had left for his early morning run 20 minutes earlier, he left the front door
unlocked but did arm the house alarm. Just moments before returning from his run, the black
male suspect made entry into the alarmed residence through the unlocked front door setting off
the house alarm. The suspect quickly took some cash from a wallet sitting on a table in the
kitchen clearly visible from the doorway before retreating out of the house. It was then that the
homeowner returned from his run to encounter the black male. The homeowner's wife and two
children, who were unaware to the intruder, had been asleep upstairs. The wife assumed her
husband had accidentally set off the house alarm and deactivated the alarm from her bedroom.

MAN WITH GUN ARRESTED DURING EMPHASIS
0 PATROL
On February 4, 2005 at 5:40 p.m., plainclothes and uniformed Medina Police Officers on extra
emphasis patrol stopped a green 4-door vehicle driven by a male of Pacific Islander descent for a
traffic violation he committed in the 8300 block of Overlake Drive West. Upon approach of the
vehicle, Officers observed the driver moving around as if he was attempting to conceal something
under his seat. Officers asked the driver to step out of the vehicle and a cursory search of the
common area was conducted. Officers located a fully loaded 9mm semi -automatic pistol under
the seat. When asked, the driver, a South Seattle resident, stated he did not possess a concealed
weapons permit. At this point, the driver was placed under arrest. In a more thorough search
afterwards of his jacket pockets and interior of the car, a container filled with suspected crystal
methamphetamine was found along with miscellaneous burglar tools, multiple stolen checks and
mail, 8 cell phones, a brand new laptop computer, and two Motorola talk about radios.
Initially the arrestee lied about a number of things to include why his was in the area, who owned
the vehicle and its contents but later admitted to purchasing them off the street in South Seattle
from a guy named "Dick." He stated he had bought the gun for $100 from his drug supplier.
Later on during questioning, the arrested driver finally admitted to being a drug addict and mail
thief before being booked into the King County Jail for felony charges. The vehicle was towed
away from the scene. This individual is being investigated as a possible suspect in other previous
crimes that occurred in our city.

The Medina Police Department would like to make residents aware of a known auto thief
who was contacting residents in Medina.
On Wednesday, January 21 s', Medina officers responded to several complaints of a
suspicious person in the area. The first resident reported that an unknown male had come
to her door in the 1500 block of 79th asking for a ride to Bellevue Square Mail. The
second report described a man asking to use a resident's phone in the 1800 block of 77th
Avenue N.E. Officers were unable to locate the subject upon arrival.
At approximately 8:30 PM that evening, Medina Officers responded to a report of a
suspicious person with a similar description in the 2000 block of 79thAvenue N.E. The
individual knocked on the door, but the homeowner did not answer, and called 911
instead. A neighbor in the 2200 block of 79th Avenue N.E. was contacted by the
individual who claimed he had been injured in an accident and needed a ride home. The
resident gave the subject a ride and dropped him off in the 1800 block of 77th Avenue
N.E.
Officers responded to that location and located the subject lying in the bushes behind a
home. The subject claimed to have a medical condition, and was transported by aid to
Overlake Hospital. After he was released, the investigation into his true identity
continued and it was later learned the subject is a notorious auto thief who targets high -
end automobiles. His modus operandi involves deceiving people into allowing him
inside their home. Once inside, he takes the key to their vehicle. During these
encounters, he often pretends to have a mental disability.
The suspect is a 45 year -old white male. He is 5' 9 tall, weighs 210 lbs., and has blue
eyes. His hair is closely shaven and he is partially bald.

The Medina Police Department wishes to advise our constituents of a string of recent car
prowls that hit our area in the last two days culminating with the arrest of at least one car
prowl suspect who is now in jail.
During the early morning hours of February 13, 2004 at approximately 12:30 AM, a
vehicle was prowled in the 700 Block of Overlake Drive East. The suspect gained entry
into a newer 4-door sedan through an unlocked door. The suspect then walked to the
8400 block of NE 6tn Street and committed two additional car prowls there under similar
conditions. At 1:30AM, the fourth and final car prowl was being committed in the 8600
block of NE 7th when the victim/homeowner went outside to lock her car doors and
interrupted a white male suspect rummaging through the interior of her vehicle. Upon
the homeowner's approach, the suspect quickly fled on foot. In all four instances, the
item sought by the suspect was loose coinage. The quick thinking homeowner then
called 911 to summon Medina Police who with the assistance of a Kirkland Police (K9)
dog discovered the suspect hiding under a blanket in the bed of a parked pickup truck in
the 900 block of 86th Avenue N.E. The suspect was arrested without incident and
processed for incarceration at the Kirkland Jail. The suspect had just been released from
the McNeil Island correctional facility two days earlier and had previous arrests for
burglary, robbery, auto theft, assault in the 1 st degree, forgery and numerous vehicle
prowls. He also had a misdemeanor warrant out of Bellevue at the time of his capture.
Medina Police detectives will be contacting the suspect's probation officer in an attempt
to help revoke his parole.
However, another car prowl occurred around 12:15AM on February 13th in the 2000
block of 79`" Avenue N.E. In this case, entry into the vehicle was forcibly made by
smashing out two -side windows with the suspects making off with a purse left inside the
vehicle. The contents of the purse included a digital camera, cellular telephone, $40 cash
and miscellaneous identification and credit cards. The culprit(s) of this vehicle prowl
does not appear to be the same individual responsible for the previously mentioned four
car prowls.
A reminder if you see any suspicious activity or person(s) in your neighborhood, please
report it to 9-1-1 immediately. We are always happy to come and check things out.
If you wish to speak to someone regarding these incidents, please call the Medina
Police Department at (425) 454-1332.

On Sunday, February 22, 2004, a Medina Officer observed a vehicle with expired tabs
traveling in the 7000 block of SR 520. After contacting the driver of the vehicle, the
Medina Officer noticed several discrepancies in the identification provided and requested
a WSP Trooper come to the location, as there was a suspicion that the driver had a federal
warrant for his arrest. A Seattle Officer also arrived at the scene at this time.
Information provided by an on -duty Kirkland Officer monitoring radio traffic confirmed
the subject's true identity. As the Medina Officer moved toward the subject to place him
under arrest, the individual broke free and began to run from police, claiming he had a
gun. The Seattle Officer remained with the vehicle as the Medina Officer and WSP
Trooper ran in pursuit of the suspect. During the pursuit, the suspect continually claimed
he had a gun and made movements toward his waistband as if to draw his weapon, trying
to provoke officers to use lethal force. The pursuit eventually ended back at the vehicle,
with officers using pepper spray, then a taser to subdue the combative suspect and place
him under arrest.
The suspect had been convicted of Federal Weapons Violations, but had escaped from
home detention and was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service. He also had a $500
warrant out of the Seattle Police Department for a Pedestrian Violation. As a result of
this collaborative arrest, the Medina Police Department will be pursuing four
misdemeanor charges, including Resisting Arrest, and Refusal to Provide Information.
In a separate incident, the Medina Police Department is currently investigating a burglary
that occurred in the 3100 block of Fairweather Place on Saturday, February 21 ", 2004,
between 4:00 PM and 7:15 PM. The home was unoccupied at the time of the burglary
and the alarm system was not set. Person(s) unknown entered the home through an
unlocked back door. Once inside, the suspect(s) removed jewelry, coin collections, and
two valuable paintings. The total estimated value of the loss is approximately

Medina Police are currently investigating two incidents of identity theft that were
reported on Friday February 27, 2004. In the first incident, the victim noticed that several
fraudulent checks had been issued against his checking account by an unknown person.
A total of eight checks were issued totaling approximately $1,400.00. In the second
incident, two fraudulent checks totaling approximately $180.00 were issued against the
victim's checking account. Information uncovered during the investigation suggests the
same individual is responsible for both thefts, and obtained the victm's checks by
pilfering their U.S. mailboxes.
Residents are encouraged to deposit outgoing mail in post office collection boxes or at
the post office, rather than in an unsecured mailbox. Similarly, incoming mail should be
removed promptly from your mailbox, or delivered to a secure location, such as a post

In a separate incident on Saturday February 28, 2004, Medina Police responded to a
vehicle prowl that occurred in the 7600 block of Overlake Drive West. The vehicle
owner awakened to the sound of her vehicle alarm going off at 5:15 AM. The victim
looked out the window and did not see anyone near her vehicle, but heard a loud engine
start up nearby. The vehicle, a 1999 Mercedes 430 was parked in the driveway in front
of the residence and had been left unlocked with the victim's purse visible inside. The
purse and its contents were taken. The total estimated value of the loss is $2800.00.

home by Medina Officers revealed the suspect(s) gained access to the home by kicking in
a rear door on the west side of the home, then removed jewelry, artwork, computer

The Medina Police Department would like citizens to be aware of a recent crime spree
involving vehicle theft, prowling, and mailbox vandalism.
At 2:20 AM Monday, June 21 s', a Medina Officer on patrol observed a white 1992 Acura
Integra leaving the area of the 3100 block of Hunts Point Road. Two white males who
appeared to be approximately 20-years old occupied the vehicle. Only after the vehicle

MEDINA POLICE "TAKE A BITE OUT OF (IDENTITY THEFT)
CRIME"
BY WORKING TOGETHER WITH AREA POLICE AGENCIES TO
BUST IDENTITY THEFT RING
City of Medina Police Detectives, along with the King County Sheriffs Department Computer
Forensics Unit, the Sammamish Police Department and the King County Prosecutor's Fraud
Division, worked together to break up an Identity Theft group that has been operating in the area
since 1999. This group was responsible for numerous mail thefts, burglaries and car prowls
throughout King and Snohomish Counties, to obtain their victim's information. This information
was then used to create false ID's and commercial checks that were used to purchase TV's,
computers, stereo's, household items and pay for daily living expenses and rent.
Six people have been positively identified as part of the crime group with the prospects of
identifying several other associates down the road. A series of three search warrants were
executed by the Medina Police Department culminating in the October 5`h search warrant when
the ringleader was arrested. In addition to the arrest, numerous computers and associated
equipment for making the false ID's and checks were seized. King County Computer Forensics is
still sifting through all of the information, but many additional victims have already been
identified.
Separate but parallel investigations were initiated by the Medina and Sammamish Police
Departments. The victims had received information from their banks regarding suspicious activity
on their accounts. Further investigation determined that fake ID's had been used from checks that
had been taken from their mail. The two police agencies worked together to complete the
investigation, which identified fraud victims from various cities throughout the region to include
Medina, Hunts Point and Yarrow Point.

MAIL THIEF NABBED IN MEDINA
On October 23, 2004 at approximately 5:15AM, a Medina Police Officer observed a
suspicious vehicle traversing the neighborhood. Upon a routine records check, the
registered owner of the vehicle was found to have a theft warrant for his arrest. The
officer stopped the vehicle with the lone white male occupant in the 2500 block of 80I'
Avenue NE. After identifying the driver as the subject listed in the theft warrant, he was
arrested without incident.
During a subsequent search of arrestee's vehicle, the Medina Officer located more than
150 pieces of stolen United States mail strewn about the interior of the vehicle. It was
later determined that at least 7 Medina residents had been unsuspecting victims of mail
theft from their residential mailboxes. The vast majority of the mail had been stolen from
residences along the 1200-1800 block of Evergreen Point Road and the 1600-1800 block
of 77 h Avenue NE. When questioned by a Medina Detective, the subject stated he was
committing crimes to support his addiction to methamphetamine (drugs). The subject was
transported to the King County Jail for incarceration and additional charges will be
sought through the prosecutor's office.
The Medina Police reminds you to be pro -active in protecting yourself from mail theft.

RECENT BURGLARY ACTIVITY
HUNTS POINT
On November 25th at approximately 5:40 PM officers responded to an alarm in the 3600
block of Hunts Point Road. During a perimeter search of the residence, officers
discovered that unknown subject(s) had forced open the French doors on the ground level
of the home by using a pry tool. Although the doors were forced open with clear access
into the home, it is believed that the subject(s) were scared off by the activated alarm
system. Nothing appears to be missing or disturbed inside the home. This is a good
example of how an alarm system can be an effective crime prevention tool.
Between November 20th— 28th, unknown subject(s) gained entry to a residence in the
3000 block of Hunts Point Circle. Once inside, the subject(s) removed nearly $4,200
worth of electronics equipment from the home. No sign of forced entry was found,
however, an exterior door leading to an above -ground deck was found to be unlocked.
Medina Police Detectives will be following up on further information that may lead to the
detection of those responsible for this crime.
The Medina Police Department has processed the crime scenes of both incidents.
Recovered evidence and fingerprints are being submitted for forensic examination
through the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab in hopes of identifying the suspect(s).

Medina Police took one person into custody Monday, 01 /27/03, in connection with an
abandoned stolen vehicle that was recovered in the 7800 block of eastbound SR-520.
At approximately 3:23 AM, Medina Police Officers observed a suspicious vehicle parked
between the Department of Transportation lot and the Park and Ride, off of SR-520. The
vehicle was running, the driver's door was open, and the right turn signal was blinking. A
records check of the license plate showed that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
Officers from the Medina Police Department, assisted by the Kirkland Police Department
and Kirkland's K9 Unit, tracked the suspect from the vehicle along NE 28th, south on
78th Avenue NE, and eventually apprehended him in the 7800 block of NE 24th.
The suspect was subsequently charged with taking a motor vehicle without permission
and was booked into the King County Jail. In addition, a no bail felony warrant was also
located out of Multnomah County, Oregon for intent to deliver marijuana. Charges for
being a fugitive from justice will be forwarded to the King County Prosecuting Attorney's
Office as well.

NATIONAL THREAT WARNING SYSTEM - HOMELAND SECURITY
INFORMATION UPDATE.
The National threat level has been raised from "ELEVATED" (Yellow) to "HIGH"
(Orange). This action is based on specific intelligence received and analyzed by the full
U.S. intelligence community.
Increasing intelligence indicates that the AL-QAEDA terrorist network maintains an on-
going interest in attacking soft or lightly secured targets in the United States and the
Persian Gulf. The likelihood of such targeting may rise in or around the end of the HAJJ
(a Muslim religious period ending mid -February 2003), according to current intelligence
reporting.
During the past five months, AL-QAEDA and affiliated groups have attacked a nightclub
in a tourist district in Bali, Indonesia and a hotel in Mombassa, Kenya. Intelligence
indicates that AL-QAEDA and affiliated groups continue to view apartments and hotels
as well as other soft targets in the United States and abroad as viable and attractive
targets.
Intelligence indicates that various methods of attack could be employed. The recent
attacks in Indonesia and Kenya, as well as the August 1998 bombings of two U.S.
embassies in East Africa, demonstrate AL-QAEDA's proficiency and willingness to
carry out large-scale vehicle bombings. Circumstances surrounding recent arrests in
Europe also indicate that AL-QAEDA has developed at least a rudimentary proficiency in
creating biological and chemical agents. Potential attacks involving radiological
weapons should also be considered.
Several U.S. economic sectors should also be considered potential targets, given their
significance and past interest by AL-QAEDA:
• The energy sector, including tank farms, refinery facilities, and oil tankers.
• The financial sector.
• Key transportation links, including bridges, tunnels, railways, subways, and civil
aviation.
• Symbolic targets such as national monuments and recreation and amusement
parks.
• U.S. symbols of power, such as the White House, the Capitol, and other Federal
buildings.
THIS ALERT IS BROUGHT TO YOUR ATTENTION FOR INFORMATION ONLY —
NO SPECIFIC ACTION ON THE PART OF RECIPENTS IS REQUIRED OTHER
THAN TO REMAIN AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND ACTIVITIES

During the night of Tuesday, February 11, 2003, person(s) unknown stole a 1995
Mercedes from a residence in the 3200 block of Evergreen Point Road. The vehicle was
unlocked at the time of the theft, and the car keys were inside. The Des Moines Police
Department recovered the stolen vehicle on Wednesday, February 12`h. Nothing appears
to have been taken, and the vehicle was not damaged.
On the same night, four vehicle prowls occurred in Medina. The location of the prowls
were between the 2800 and 3200 block of Evergreen Point Road. In all the cases, the
vehicles were left unlocked either in a driveway or open carport and the contents of the
car were rummaged through. In several cases, personal items such as a cell phone and
food items were taken.
On Wednesday, February 12, 2003, a Medina Officer took a report of an attempted
burglary which occurred in the 1200 block of 80thPlace N.E. Person(s) unknown
attempted to gain access to the unoccupied home by prying the hinges off the back door.
Fortunately, the suspect(s) were unsuccessful in their attempt and no entry was made into
the home. The date and time of the attempt are unknown, although it is most likely to
have occurred sometime between January 15`h and February l 1 `h, 2003.
During the early morning hours of Thursday, February 13, 2003, Medina Police
responded to a report of a suspicious person located in the 1800 block of Evergreen Point
Road. Officers from Medina and Kirkland tracked the suspect and apprehended him a
short time later. A records check of the suspect showed him with a felony escape warrant
and the suspect was placed under arrest. Medina Officers were later able to determine
that items in the suspect's possession were actually taken from the various area car
prowls. The suspect was booked into King County Jail. Items in his possession included
a plastic bag full of change and a radar detector.
Several hours later, residents began reporting that they had been victims of a vehicle
prowler. Subsequently, the Medina Police Department has taken six more reports of
vehicle prowls that occurred within the last two days. The locations of these prowls::
range from the 1800 block of Evergreen Point Road to the 3600 block of Fairweather
Lane. Once again, all the vehicles that were prowled were left unlocked. In light of
this connection, charges for possession of stolen property will be forwarded to the King
County Prosecuting Attorney's Office against the suspect arrested earlier this morning.
At this time, there have been ten reported vehicle prowls in the last two days. It is
believed that some of the prowls occurred Tuesday night, and some Wednesday night by
the car prowlers. The significant link between these cases is that in all events, the
vehicles were left unlocked. Residents are reminded to lock their vehicles when they are
left unattended. Vehicle prowls are often crimes of opportunity, and if your vehicle is
left unlocked, it is vulnerable to a prowler.
This recent activity brings the total number of vehicle prowls in Medina and Hunts Point
to 12 for 2003.

American Red Cross Homeland Security Advisory System Recommendations for
Individuals, Families, Neighborhoods, Schools and Businesses
The White House issued Homeland Security Directive -3, in March 2002, which
established five threat conditions for possible terrorist attacks: Green = Low; Blue =
Guarded; Yellow= Elevated; Orange = High; and Red = Severe.
General explanations were given for preparedness activities for each level, but these were
intended mainly for government agencies. Across the country, questions of "What does a
condition 'yellow' mean to me or my family? or What does this mean to a business or
school?" remained. The American Red Cross recognized the need and developed a
complementary set of guidelines for the following areas:
• Individuals
• Families
• Neighborhoods
• Schools
• Businesses
The attached document provides information regarding recommended actions each
family should consider during each of the five threat conditions. Please take the time to
read through these recommendations and determine what steps you can take to increase
the safety of your family.

Recently, there have been two Vehicle Prowls in the community with unique
characteristics.
During the night of Monday, March 10'', 2003, a Vehicle Prowl occurred in the 8600
block of N.E. 6th Street, Medina. The vehicle, a 1997 Audi A4, was found sitting on four
concrete blocks, with all four tires and rims stolen. The driver's door window was
broken, the battery wires were cut, and both front seats, as well as the CD player, were
taken from the vehicle.
In a related event, another Vehicle Prowl occurred during the early morning hours of
Friday, April 4th, 2003. The vehicle, located in the 3000 block of Hunts Point Road, was
found sitting on four concrete blocks, with all four tires and rims stolen. In this case,
there was no damage to the vehicle, nor was anything else taken. Oddly, the vehicle
involved is also a 1997 Audi A4.

The following information was recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention regarding Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT SARS
A NEW DISEASE CALLED SARS
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a new disease
called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The disease was first reported
among people in the Guangdong Province (China), Hanoi (Vietnam), and Hong Kong
(Special Administrative Region of China). It has since spread to other countries. As of
April 7, more than 100 cases of SARS had been reported in the United States. This fact
sheet provides basic information about the disease and what is being done to combat its
spread.
SYMPTOMS OF SARS
In general, SARS begins with a fever greater than 100.4° F [>38.0°C]. Other symptoms
may include headache, an overall feeling of discomfort, and body aches. Some people
also experience mild respiratory symptoms. After 2 to 7 days, SARS patients may
110 develop a dry cough and have trouble breathing.
HOW SARS SPREADS
Public health experts think that SARS is spread by close contact between people. SARS
is most likely spread when someone sick with the disease coughs droplets into the air and
someone else breathes them in. It is possible that SARS also can spread more broadly
through the air or from touching objects that have become contaminated.
WHO IS AT RISK FOR SARS
Cases of SARS continue to be reported mainly among people who have had direct close
contact with an infected person, such as those sharing a household with a SARS patient
and health-care workers who did not use infection control procedures while taking care of
a SARS patient. In the United States, there is no indication of community spread at this
time. CDC continues to monitor this situation very closely.
POSSIBLE CAUSE OF SARS
Scientists at CDC and other laboratories have detected a previously unrecognized
coronavirus in patients with SARS. While the new coronavirus is still the leading
hypothesis for the cause of SARS, other viruses are still under investigation as potential
causes.
CDC RECOMMENDATIONS
CDC has issued recommendations and guidelines for people who may be affected by this
outbreak.
For individuals considering travel to affected parts of Asia:
CDC advises that people planning elective or nonessential travel to mainland China and
Hong Kong, Singapore, and Hanoi may wish to postpone their trips until further notice.
Visit www.cdc.pov/ncidod/sars/travel advice.htm for more information about CDC's
advice to travelers.
For individuals who think they might have SARS:
People with symptoms of SARS (fever of more than 100.4°F [>38.0°C] that is
accompanied by a cough and/or difficulty breathing) should consult a health-care
provider. To help the health-care provider make a diagnosis, tell them about any recent
travel to places where SARS has been reported or whether there was contact with
someone who had these symptoms.
For family members caring for someone with SARS:
CDC has developed interim infection control recommendations available at
www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/ic-closecontacts.htm for patients with suspected SARS in the
household. These basic precautions should be followed for 10 days after respiratory
symptoms and fever are gone. During that time, SARS patients are asked to limit
interactions outside the home (not go to work, school, or other public areas).
For health-care workers:
Transmission of SARS to health-care workers appears to have occurred after close
contact with sick people before recommended infection control precautions were put into
use. CDC has issued interim infection control recommendations for health-care settings
(www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/infectioncontrol.htm) as well as for the management of
exposures to SARS in health-care and other institutional settings
(www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/exvosureguidance.htm).
WHAT CDC IS DOING ABOUT SARS
CDC is working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners
in a global effort to address the SARS outbreak. For its part, CDC has taken the
following actions:
• Activated its Emergency Operations Center to provide round-the-clock
coordination and response.
• Committed more than 250 medical experts and support staff to work on the SARS
response.
• Deployed medical officers, epidemiologists, and other specialists to assist with
on -site investigations around the world.
Provided ongoing assistance to state and local health departments in investigating
possible cases of SARS in the United States.
• Conducted extensive laboratory testing of clinical specimens from SARS patients
to identify the cause of the disease.
• Initiated a system for distributing health alert notices to travelers who may have
been exposed to cases of SARS.
To find out more about SARS, go to www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars and
www.who.int/csr/sars/en/ or call the CDC public response hotline at (888) 246-2675
(English), (888) 246-2857 (Espanol), or (866) 874-2646 (TTY).

0 Identity Theft is one of the nation's fastest growing crimes. The identity thief generally
steals the name, Social Security Number, Date of Birth and account numbers of victims
in order to assume their identity and charge services and merchandise against their good
credit. There are a number of ways the thief can obtain your personal information,
including stealing your mail, hacking into legitimate financial databases and purloining
financial records maintained by companies with whom you do business. Most often you
will not know you are a victim of an identity thief until after charges have been made
against your credit. Once you learn your identity and credit have been compromised, you
should immediately contact one of the three credit reporting agencies listed below. In
addition, you may also wish to subscribe to a credit monitoring service to alert you to
unauthorized activity on your credit records.
Reporting identity theft to the credit reporting agencies:
The nation's three credit report agencies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are
simplifying the way victims can notify them about identify fraud. One call to any of the
credit reporting agencies listed below will automatically result in the notification of the
other two. The company receiving the initial call will electronically notify the other two
credit reporting companies of the crime and a fraud alert will be put on the victim's credit
report at all three nationwide credit reporting companies within 24 hours. Additionally,
the victim will be opted out of all pre -approved offers of credit and insurance for two
years. The fraud alert will be displayed by each national credit reporting agency to all

lenders or other users that access the report in the future. Once notified that the consumer
has been a victim of I.D. fraud, the lender can then avoid opening a fraudulent account.
The credit reporting companies' fraud assistance departments can be contacted at the
following numbers. A single call to just one of these numbers is all that a victim needs to
make:

TransUnion............ (800) 680-7289 www.transunion.com
Credit Monitoring:
To further safeguard yourself and your good credit from an identity thief, you may wish
to subscribe to a service offered by each of the credit reporting agencies that monitors
your credit report and alerts you by email when there are changes/inquiries to your credit
file. In the case of Experian and Equifax, email notification of changes to your file is
made within 24 hours of posting. In the case of TransUnion, the notifications are made
weekly. Details about these services can be obtained from the websites of the three credit
reporting agencies. Charges for these services vary between credit agencies. Although
the three credit reporting agencies do not share credit information, lenders generally

I* Consumer Alert: Tax Advisors Not Associated With County Governments
Attorney General Christine Gregoire today warned consumers to be on the lookout for a
direct mail solicitation about the Senior Citizen and Disabled Persons Property Tax
Exemption Program that is really a preliminary pitch for a variety of financial products.
Though the mailing appears to come from local county assessors' offices, it is really from
a private outfit that sells insurance, estate planning, reverse mortgages and other financial
products. The Attorney General's Consumer Protection office has received
notice of the mailing from assessors' offices in Snohomish, Pierce and King counties.
The solicitations are from a business called Elder Planners of Washington, which is
owned and operated by an Everett firm named Senior Loan Centre, LLC. According to
the assessors' offices, some consumers who have received the Elder Planners of
Washington mailing said they incorrectly thought it came from county offices.
Consumers who respond are later called by Senior Loan Centre representatives who say
they must come to consumers' homes to assess the home's value and to obtain additional
information on consumers' income. Once inside consumers' homes, these representatives
try to sell a variety of financial products.
The state Insurance Commissioner's office currently is taking steps to revoke the
insurance agent's license of Senior Loan Centre principal Jack Chandler for allegedly
engaging in misleading sales tactics. Gregoire warned that consumers should obtain
information on the Senior Citizen and Disabled Persons Property Tax Exemption
program directly from county assessors' offices. And she warned consumers to not let
strangers into their home to make commercial pitches, but instead to request information
by mail

Dead bird surveillance
The West Nile virus needs host birds and mosquitoes to survive. The virus can be passed from
mosquito to bird or from bird to mosquito. At some point, an infected mosquito may bite another
victim, like a horse or even a human being.
Though many birds and other animals may be infected by West Nile virus, some birds are
particularly susceptible to the virus. Crows, jays and other "corvid" birds often sicken and die from
West Nile virus. That's why Public Health is watching out for dead crows and why Public Health is
testing them for West Nile virus. When Public Health finds a dead crow with West Nile virus,
King County will know the virus has arrived in our area.
You can help! Call Public Health at 206-205-4394 if you find a dead crow in King County. The
crow you find may be selected for testing for West Nile virus, though all dead crow reports will be
tracked in the database. When you call, you will be asked a few questions. First, is the bird
freshly dead (dead less than 24 hours)? Second, where and when did you find the dead bird? We
will need to know the address where the bird was found. Third, is the bird undamaged? Only
undamaged birds are suitable for testing. You may call Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30
p. M.
Not all crows need to be tested for Public Health to effectively monitor for West Nile virus. In fact,
we receive many more calls reporting dead crows than the laboratory can test. If the crow you
find is not appropriate for testing, or if you find a dead bird that is not a crow, you may dispose of
it in your garbage can. Public Health is tracking crow deaths, so even if the bird you find will not
be tested, we are still interested in the information you provide.
Birds discovered on Friday and Saturday will not be tested and should be disposed of in the
garbage. Using gloves or a shovel, double bag the bird in plastic bags and dispose of it in your
garbage. Though dead birds will not transmit West Nile virus, you should not pick up a dead
animal with your bare hands.
To help us learn more about West Nile virus, Public Health is tracking the deaths of birds other
than crows, though we will not be picking these birds up for testing. The types of birds, in addition
to crows, that may be affected by West Nile virus and we are interested in receiving reports on
are: ravens, jays, magpies, and raptors (eagles, hawks, and owls). Call 206-205-4394 if you find
one of these types of birds. You may call Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The University of Washington is conducting a study on crows. If you find a crow with a colored
band on its leg, you found one the crows in the study. When you call Public Health to report the
dead crow you found, please mention that it has a band on its leg. To learn more about the
University of Washington's study, visit www.urbanecology.washington.edu/Crows/westnile htm

Sometime between 2:00 and 3 :00 PM on Wednesday, October Is', a vehicle prowl
occurred in the 8900 block of Groat Point Drive. The vehicle, a 2000 4-door Audi A4,
was parked in the driveway and left unlocked with one window rolled down at the time of
the incident. Items taken include a cellular phone and the victim's wallet, although
contents of the wallet were later recovered in a nearby yard.
The suspect is described as a young male, 5' 10" tall, with a thin build. He is described
as having blond hair and fair skin. At the time of the incident, he was seen wearing a
dark blue baseball cap, a white long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans.
Evidence suggests this was a crime of opportunity. The suspect chose this neighborhood
as his target, and went from car to car searching for vehicles with unlocked doors.
Vehicles which are left unattended, unlocked, and have valuables inside make
particularly tempting targets for a vehicle prowler. Whether day or night, it is important

This Sunday morning on 10-19-03 at approximately 6AM, the Medina Police Department
located and safely recovered a 10-year old boy that had been recently kidnapped from his
mother from the Spokane, WA area. The boy who was found unharmed had been
reported missing since the early morning hours of 10-17-03. The boy had been taken by
an acquaintance of his mother that claimed he "was trying to get the boy away from her
mother so he could have some kind of life."
The following is a chronology of the events that lead up to the 10-year old boy's safe
recovery.
On 10-18-03 at approximately 10:30PM a Medina Police Officer was investigating a
suspicious vehicle parked in the rear parking lot behind the Saint Thomas Church. The
vehicle contained two occupants, a 21-year old male and a 10-year old boy. Upon
questioning by the officer, both informed the officer that they were brothers and were just
having minor car problems but did not require any assistance. In addition, upon a routine
records check the adult was clear of wants and warrants. The Medina Officer cleared the
contact shortly thereafter.
At approximately 0550 hours while reviewing paperwork at the police station, Corporal
Yourkoski noticed a teletype disseminated to all law enforcement agencies in the State of
Washington asking for officers to be on the look out for a kidnapping victim. Corporal
Yourkoski noticed that the suspect listed in the teletype was the same individual he had
contacted earlier in his shift. Corporal Yourkoski returned to the parking lot to find both
occupants asleep inside the suspect's Green Ford PU truck. The 21-year old suspect was
taken into custody without incident and the 10-year old boy was found unharmed and in
good condition.
The 10-year old boy was released to the custody of the Department of Social Health and
Services. The mother is reported to be enroute to this area from Spokane to claim her
son.
The 21-year old male was taken to the King County Jail and will be charged with
kidnapping a juvenile.

estimated to be $100.
On Friday, October 31 St, at approximately 7:20 PM, Medina Police responded to a report
of a suspicious person located in the 8200 block of N.E. 25t' Street. As the complainant
and his family were watching a movie, he looked up toward the patio door that leads to
their backyard and was startled to see a male subject standing to the side of the door and
watching his family. Upon making eye contact, the subject turned around and walked
away. The homeowner went to the front door and looked outside, but did not see anyone
or any suspicious vehicles. Upon arrival, Medina Officers conducted a perimeter check

MEDINA POLICE OFFICERS THWART RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY
Within the last week, there have been three (3) instances of forced entry burglaries
occurring in our city.
Sometime between the hours of 8:30AM and 6:45PM on Tuesday, November 4th, a
forced entry burglary occurred in the-1 800 block of Evergreen Point Road. Unknown
person(s) gained entry into the unoccupied residence by prying open a window on the
north side of the home. Once inside, the suspect(s) ransacked the interior of the home
and removed a digital camera valued at $400. The home was equipped with an alarm
system however the alarm was not active.
In light of the recent daytime burglaries, Medina Police Officers were conducting
undercover surveillance of the area when at 1:30PM on November 5`h they came across a
suspicious white male in his 30's riding a mountain bicycle and in. possession of a dark
gym bag in the 3200 block of Evergreen Point Road. Not knowing if a crime had been
committed, Medina Officers attempted to contact the subject. As officers approached the
subject, he suddenly sped off on the mountain bicycle departing through some nearby
wooded trails discarding the dark gym bag along the way. Officers pursued the subject
on foot but were unable to locate him in the nearby heavily wooded area. A Kirkland
Police canine unit was also called to the scene to help with the search but was unable to
locate the subject. Officers recovered the discarded gym bag and found the contents to
include jewelry, a laptop computer, miscellaneous electronic equipment, music CD's, a
jar of coins, a change of clothes and some drug paraphernalia.
Officers would later discover that an unoccupied home in the 3200 block of Evergreen
0 Point Road had indeed been burglarized. Officers later found the mountain bicycle used
by the subject to get away abandoned in the wooded area within the Fairweather Nature
Preserve. The items inside the gym bag and the mountain bicycle were later verified as
stolen from the burglarized home and returned to the grateful homeowner. Some of the
stolen items will be processed for fingerprint value through the Washington State Patrol
crime lab in hopes of identifying the suspect.
Burglaries such as these hold potential risks for homeowners since the intruder(s) have

DEVELOPMENTS IN RECENT NORTH EVERGREEN POINT BURGLARIES
A fourth in the recent series of forced entry burglaries occurred in the Town of Hunts
Point today, November 6t', between the hours of 10:30 AM and 2:45 PM. Unknown
person(s) gained entry into the unoccupied residence, located in the 3100 block of 80'h
Avenue N.E., by prying open a window on the south side of the home.
Developing leads suggest the suspect from yesterday's burglary avoided capture the
previous afternoon by apparently jumping into the waters of Fairweather Bay and
remaining there for over two hours while police searched the area. The suspect then later
concealed himself overnight in a boat moored in the area avoiding police detection. This
morning, once the homeowner left the residence, the suspect emerged from his hiding
spot and entered the unoccupied home. Once inside, the suspect ransacked the residence,
acquiring dry clothing and removing jewelry valued at approximately $3,000.
The Medina Police Department processed the scene and located evidence and fingerprints
that will be submitted for forensic examination through the Washington State Patrol
Crime Lab in hopes of identifying the subject.
The burglary suspect is described as a white male in his late 20's to early 30's, with
sandy blonde or light brown hair. He is approximately 5' 8" tall, with a slim build.
Medina Police Detectives continue to pursue investigative leads and are confident that the
investigation will result in the identification and arrest of the suspect. Meanwhile, we are
continuing active undercover and visible patrols of the area.
Residents are reminded to activate your home alarm system anytime your home is
unoccupied. If you observe any suspicious person matching the above description in the
north Evergreen Point area, do not confront them and please call 911 immediately.

VEHICLE PROWLER ARRESTED BY MEDINA OFFICERS
Medina Officers arrested an individual believed to be responsible for seven vehicle
prowls that occurred from Thursday, November 13th to Friday, November 14th in the City
of Medina.
On Thursday, November 13th, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, a vehicle
prowl occurred 2800 block of 76th Avenue N.E., in the Park & Ride. Upon returning to
her vehicle, the victim noticed that the stereo had been removed. Inspection. of the
vehicle showed the suspect pried the metal away from the door handle to expose the
locking mechanism and gain entry to the vehicle.
On Friday, November 14th, at 7:30 AM, Medina Officers were dispatched to a report of a
vehicle prowl in progress in the 7800 block of N.E. 14th Street. A homeowner in the area
witnessed the suspect enter a vehicle near his home. Upon contact, the suspect fled the
area running east on 14th, crossing through the Overlake Golf Course, and continuing into
Clyde Hill. The suspect was located by the Kirkland K-9 Unit in a tree in the 1600 block
of 85th Avenue N.E. in Clyde Hill.
Identification of the suspect revealed he had two outstanding no bail felony warrants for
his arrest. One warrant was out of the Department of Corrections for being an escapee
from community custody and the second out of King County for failing to register as a
sex offender. His criminal history includes a conviction for Rape in the Second Degree
and multiple convictions for Burglary and Theft.
Subsequent reports revealed three more vehicle prowls associated with the suspect
occurred during the same time frame in the 800 block of 84`h Avenue N.E. In one case,
the suspect left drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. Two other vehicle prowls have been
reported, one in the 1400 block of 80t' Avenue N.E. and another in the 7800 block of
Overlake Drive West. The man arrested is believed to be responsible for all seven of
these incidents.
In another event, a Medina Officer located an unoccupied stolen vehicle parked in the
2800 block of 84 h Avenue N.E. at approximately 10:00 PM on Friday, November 141h
The vehicle was stolen out of Seattle and had been abandoned by person(s) unknown.
The vehicle was processed and partial fingerprints will be submitted for forensic
examination through the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab.

The Medina Police Department would like to make residents aware of a forced -entry
vehicle prowl and a burglary that occurred recently.
During the early morning hours of Monday, December 22°d, in the 2400 block of
Evergreen Point Road, between 1:20 AM and 7:30 AM, person(s) unknown threw a large
rock through the driver's side window of a 1993 Jeep Cherokee while it was parked in the
homeowner's driveway. The suspect(s) then reached through the broken glass and
removed $25.00 in cash that was left clearly visible on the center console. When the
owner of the vehicle discovered the smashed window in the morning, the doors to the
vehicle were still locked and the alarm was set. The alarm did not sound during the
incident because none of the doors were opened.
During the same period of time, person(s) unknown entered an attached garage via the
garage door, which was left open by the homeowner. The suspect(s) entered two
unlocked vehicles parked in the garage. In one vehicle, the owner left her handbag on the
passenger seat and the suspect(s) removed two credit cards from her wallet. Shortly after,
the suspect(s) began making purchases using the stolen credit cards. The home is
equipped with an alarm system which was activated during the evening, but it does not
cover the garage area.
Residents are reminded to call 911 if they need to report a crime, or need an officer to
respond for any reason. Even non -emergency requests for officer contact should be

Sometime between the hours of 1:00 pm and 5:30 pm, Friday, July 5, 2002, person or
persons unknown entered a residence in the 1600 block of 77 Avenue NE, Medina,
through a locked downstairs, single -pane, aluminum framed, sliding bedroom window. It
appears that entry into the home was gained by cutting out a small portion of the
windowpane with a glasscutter and reaching inside and unlocking the window. At the
time of this burglary, the resident was in the front yard of the home gardening and was
not aware of the crime until later. The burglar(s) in this case apparently walked
throughout the house looking for items of value. A gold necklace and other jewelry,
silverware and cash were removed from the home. A neighbor observed a possible
suspect in the immediate area. This person is described as a male, white, mid -thirties in
age, average height and weight, brown hair, clean shaven, tanned complexion, and
wearing blue jeans, white T-shirt, baseball cap and carrying a plastic garbage bag
(possibly used to carry off the stolen items). No vehicle was observed.

On 07-12-02 at approx 1008 hours, Medina Police were called to 4450 Hunts Point Road
on a call of a burglary in progress. The resident had returned from a morning engagement
to find an unknown intruder lounging on his living room couch. The intruder, a white
male in his early 30's had taken all of his clothes off except for his boxer shorts. The
resident asked the male subject what he was doing in his house. The male subject replied,
"I live here!" The resident asked, "Since when?" to which the male subject replied,
"Since now! Isn't that the craziest thing you've ever heard?" The surprised resident
immediately barricaded himself inside a bedroom and called 911. Two Medina Police
units arrived in time to observe the uninvited intruder sipping on a bottled beverage and
smoking a cigarette. When placed under arrest, the suspect was asked by officers what he
was doing inside the home to which he replied, "I'm King of the World. I just let myself
in. I can stay anywhere I want." The subject stated he had seen pictures of the home for
sale in the newspaper and that, "The sun god Rah had ordered me to come claim the
house as my own." The subject made entry into the house through an unlocked door. The
subject later stated, "What's the big deal? I had a drink of water at some dude's house."
The subject was booked into King County Jail for Investigation of Burglary pending a

During the evening of Friday, August 16, 2002, person or persons unknown burglarized
two residences in Hunts Point. The first residence, located in the 4200 block of Hunts
Point Road, was entered sometime between 7:00 PM and midnight. In this case,
approximately $50,000 in jewelry and cash was removed from an upstairs master
bedroom. Entrance appears to have been gained through an unlocked lower -level door.
Although the home is equipped with a security system, it was not activated at the time
because the homeowners had not yet retired for the evening.
The second residence, located in the 3600 block of Hunts Point Road, was entered
sometime between 10:55 PM and midnight. In this case, approximately $10.00 in cash
was removed from a purse located in the entry hallway. The purse was discarded outside
the residence. A chime connected to the security system alerted the residents that the
front door had been opened and upon inspection, they discovered the door ajar and the
purse missing.
A K-9 unit was brought in to search the area surrounding both residences, however, no
intruder(s) were located. Forensic examinations were conducted at both residences with
negative results.
These latest two burglaries are similar in M.O. to several other recent burglaries in Hunts

intruder(s) have apparently considered and are willing to risk the possibility that they
may be discovered by the occupants while they are inside the residence.

At approximately 11:45 PM, Sunday, August 25th, a Medina Police Officer observed
a 1992 Plymouth Voyager backing out of a driveway in the 1000 block of Evergreen
Point Road. Due to the late hour, the Officer turned around to take a closer look at
the vehicle and observed it pull into a driveway in the 800 block of Evergreen Point
Road. As he approached the vehicle, the Officer found that the car had crashed into a
security gate at the entrance to the residence and had been abandoned, the occupants
having fled on foot. During the next several hours, with the assistance neighboring
police departments, including K-9 units, the suspects were tracked from the 800 block
to the 1800 block of Evergreen Point Road, however, the trail was ultimately lost. It
has been determined that the abandoned vehicle was stolen from the City of Des
Moines earlier in the evening. Last week a vehicle was reported stolen from the 3600
block of Fairweather Lane and was recovered a few days later in Des Moines. We
are investigating a possible connection between these two incidents.
It seems probable that the suspect(s) in this case were driving through Medina
looking for homes to burglarize, or vehicles to prowl or steal. As such, you are
reminded to always remove valuables from your vehicles, to always lock car doors
and to park, if possible, in a locked garage. Similarly, you should always keep
exterior doors in your home locked, even while you are inside. In warm weather
when windows are open for ventilation, make sure they are locked in an open position
too narrow for a person to gain access to your home.

During Monday, September 2, 2002, person or persons unknown burglarized three
residences in Medina. The first residence, located in the 2400 block of Evergreen
Point Road, was entered sometime between 12:30 AM and 4:00 AM. In this case,
two purses were taken from the kitchen. Entrance appears to have been gained
through an unlocked door to the house accessible through the garage. Although the
home is equipped with a security system, it was not activated at the time.
The second residence, located in the 3200 block of Evergreen Point Road, was
entered sometime between 12:30 AM and 4:00 AM when the homeowner was
awakened by the barking of his dog. The homeowner also heard a coughing sound
from downstairs, which he now believes came from the burglar. Later in the morning
the homewowner discovered a computer case containing documents, a backpack, and
a baby diaper bag were missing from the house. Entrance in this case appears to have
been gained through a rear unlocked door. Although the residence was equipped with
a security system, it was not activated at the time.
The third residence, located in the 1800 block of 77th Avenue NE, was entered at
approximately 12:45 PM by cutting through the screen of an open window. No items
were taken as the burglar appears to have been interupted by the homeowner's return
and quickly left the house through another window. As in the first two instances, the
residence was equipped with a security system, however, it was not activated at the
time.
These three most recent burglaries bring the total number of residential burglaries in
Medina and Hunts Point to 18 this year. As mentioned in a previous E-lert, residents
are reminded to keep their exterior doors locked, even while in the house and, if so
equipped, to activate security systems to sound a chime when exterior doors are
opened.
In a potentially related event, a suspicious vehicle was seen in the 2000 block of
Evergreen Point Road in the early morning hours of Monday, September 2nd. When
the officer attempted to stop the vehicle for speeding, the vehicle suddenly Y
accelerated and fled the area towards Bellevue, where it was later recovered as a
stolen vehicle from the Renton, WA area.
In another possibly related event, a vehicle was recovered in the 3600 block of
Evergreen Point Road on Monday, September 2nd. The vehicle had been stolen out
of Mercer Island, WA approximately one month ago, and abandoned in Medina for
one week until a resident called in the suspicious vehicle to the police. This is the
fourth event involving a stolen vehicle in the past two weeks (reference E-lerts #4 and
#5). In light of these recent events, please make sure to lock your vehicles and
remove all valuables from inside.

Medina Police took three people into custody Saturday, 9/14/02, in connection with a
burglary and car prowl investigation in Hunts Point/Medina. At approximately 3:25 AM,
a Hunts Point resident called 911 to report that someone entered their home in the 4200
block of Hunts Point Road and stole items from a purse in the hallway, as Well as
prowled through two vehicles parked in the garage and one parked in the driveway. The
barking of their dogs awakened the homeowners. Officers from the Medina Police
Department, assisted by the surrounding jurisdictions of Kirkland, Clyde Hill and
Redmond Police Departments, immediately cordoned off the area surrounding Hunts
Point. A Jeep Cherokee stolen earlier on Saturday from Mercer Island was recovered in
the area. A search of the vehicle disclosed items stolen in the Hunts Point burglary and
well as vehicle prowls in Hunts Point and Mercer Island. K-9 units from Redmond and
Kirkland were brought in and tracked down three suspects following a two and a half
hour foot search of the vicinity. One of the suspects was located hiding in a boat docked
at a nearby pier, another suspect was found hiding in a tree and the third was discovered
concealed beneath some bushes. Investigation has also disclosed that a Ford Expedition
stolen Wednesday night from the Bellevue area was abandoned in Mercer Island near the
point where the Jeep Cherokee was stolen.
One of the suspects was booked into the KC jail on investigation of residential burglary,
automobile theft, possession of stolen property, theft, and vehicle prowling. One juvenile
suspect was released to an adult relative and the other juvenile suspect was confined at
the KC Juvenile Detention Center in Seattle on a no -bail, King County felony warrant for
car theft. At this time, it is expected that both juveniles will be charged with residential
burglary, possession of stolen property, automobile theft and theft. We believe these
suspects are responsible for a number of similar crimes in the Points Community and the
Greater Eastside area.
Also, person(s) unknown entered a home in the 500 block of Overlake Drive East,
Medina, by kicking in the locked and dead -bolted front door of the residence, as well the
locked side door to the detached garage. The homeowners were away from the residence
for several days and discovered the crime upon their return. A neighbor overheard a loud
noise coming from the residence at approximately 10:00 AM, Saturday, 9/7/02, and it is
assumed that the burglary occurred at that time. The garage and all rooms in the home
were rummaged through and several items of property were stolen. The home was not
equipped with a security alarm system.

Between Saturday, October 19, 2002 and Wednesday, October 23, 2002, three vehicle
prowls occurred in Medina. One occurred on Evergreen Point Road, another on Overlake
Drive West and a third on 84th Avenue NE.
In one case, a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol belonging to a police officer from
another city was removed from the trunk of the officer's unlocked vehicle, which was
parked at a residence in the 900 block of Evergreen Point Road within a fenced area. In
the second case on Overlake Drive West, an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway in
the 7700 block was entered and the contents of the glove box and center console were
rifled through, although nothing is believed to have been taken. In the third case, a
locked vehicle in the 400 block of 84th Avenue NE was forcibly entered by prying the
door lock, and a large number of CD's and a book bag were removed.
You are reminded that when possible, you should park your vehicle off the street and

During the night of Tuesday, November 19, 2002, person or persons unknown prowled
two vehicles in Medina.
The first vehicle, located in the 400 block of Overlake Drive East, was entered sometime
between 7:30 PM Tuesday evening and 8:00 AM Wednesday morning. The owner
discovered that her front passenger window had been shattered, and her purse had been
removed.
The second vehicle, also located in the 400 block of Overlake Drive East, was entered
sometime between 7:00 PM Tuesday evening and 7:45 AM Wednesday morning. The
owner discovered that his driver's window had been broken out. It appears as though the
console of the vehicle had been opened, but no items appear to be missing at this time.
Although both vehicles were equipped with alarms, neither owner recalls hearing their
alarm sound during the night. Due to the fact that the doors do not appear to have been
opened, it is possible that the alarms were never tripped.
These two vehicle prowls bring the yearly total for Medina and Hunts Point to 24. They
are different from previous prowls in that entry was gained by force, rather than by
searching for unlocked vehicles. Residents are reminded to remove all valuable items
from their vehicles when left unattended.

TO: Medina/Hunts Point Community E-lert Recipients
FROM: Michael F. Knapp, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: Community E-lert #12
This announcement is provided by the Medina Police Department as a public service
to residents of the City of Medina and the Town of Hunts Point. It is our intention to
distribute these E-lerts within 24 hours following an occurrence or condition that
may have public safety or community well-being implications. E-lerts are also
available via fax for those residents without access to email.
Between November 20, 2002 and December 18, 2002, there have been eight reported
incidents of mail theft in Medina and Hunts Point. During the holiday season, mail
thieves are particularly active, looking for gifts, checks, bank records, and credit card
information. In some cases, the mail theft has then resulted in check fraud and use of the
victim's identity.
To protect yourself, all outgoing mail should be taken to the post office, or dropped in a
blue postal box and not placed in your personal mailbox for pickup. When possible, your
mail should be removed from your mailbox immediately upon delivery. Those of you
who regularly receive checks or other financial information through the mail should
consider purchasing locking mailboxes or getting a post office box. Either option should
be discussed with the United States Postal Service.
If you believe you are a victim of mail theft, please report it immediately to the Medina
Police Department.
