Biglow, Jr. 2425 Evergreen Point Road Medina, WA 98039-1531 November 24, 2008 To: The Medina City Council Re: City Hall Options; My Two Cents The Recommendations being presented to the Council this evening seem to me ill advised, because 1. They are, I believe, inconsistent with our present Comprehensive Plan, damaging our Beach Park, damaging an historic building, preventing future use of the City Hall as an adjunct of the Park, and failing to use existing facilities (Schools, Overlake Golf & Country Club and the Medina Store) for City purposes, with a resulting waste of City land; 2. By assuming that our police should have their headquarters in the City Hall, they are being presented without adequate consideration of combining our police with Clyde Hill's within the foreseeable future; the police in City Hall would then be an outpost, like the one planned for Hunts Point, and marine contact. If the police downsize, the space problem in City Hall is solved. 3. They are a waste of money which can be avoided with a careful consideration and use of the existing facilities mentioned above; 4. They are an imprudent application of funds in view of the current indications that tax revenues to the City (based on sales taxes) will decrease in the near future; 5. They invite an undesireable expansion of government in Medina, which will be wasteful and inconsistent with our rural character. . The Medina Store remains a problem for its neighbors and, as presently operated, may not succeed. Expert opinion is pessimistic. Competition from Bellevue (QFC, Whole Foods, Safeway, Amazon Fresh) is increasing. Mrs. Lee has been encouraged by the City to rebuild (an enlargement), open and operate, and should be fully compensated (a moral obligation only); but the rest of the Store can and should be used for City purposes. In the process, the City can protect the neighbors, solving their problem.
