Doug Dicharry 2/15/11 <I I'Y OF Clyde ' 1 1 9605 NE 24" Street • Clyde Hill, Washington 98004 425-453-7800 • Fax: 425-462-1936 • www.clydehill.org February 14, 2011 Jack Whisner, Transportation Planner King County Metro Department of Transportation 201 South Jackson Street Seattle, WA 98104 Subject: Bus Service Issues in Clyde Hill Dear Mr. Whisner: Thank you for attending, on behalf of Metro, the City of Clyde Hill Council meeting on February 8th. As the Council emphatically made you aware, the availability, or lack thereof, of public transportation to, from and through the City of Clyde Hill is of significant, if not grave, concern to the City. Historically, Clyde Hill has been underserved by Metro. It is granted that ridership on the two routes (route 261 and 271) which traverse the periphery of Clyde Hill is lower than would otherwise be hoped for. However, this can be explained in no small part by the very inconvenience of these two routes to the majority of the citizens of the City. But the availability of these two routes, no matter how inconvenient and limited, is better than no service at all. Alarmingly, Victor Obeso by his recent letter, and confirmed by you, now informs the City, that even these two routes may be lost to the City in the next few years. The loss of Metro service to the City is unacceptable. The City has invested thousands of hours to assure that public transportation facilities have been incorporated into the 520 Project at both Evergreen Point and at 92nd Avenue. These facilities are both regional and local in their function. The citizens of Clyde Hill, along with the citizens of Medina, Hunts Point, Yarrow Point and West Bellevue, need, indeed are entitled to expect, good, reliable and timely public transport service to, from and through the City of Clyde Hill to these two facilities, as well as directly to other transportation facilities on both the East and West side. Metro has provided the City of Clyde Hill little opportunity to work directly with Metro to develop, institute and maintain public transportation that serves the City. The City wishes to partner with Metro. In this regard, the City solicits feedback from Metro as to how the City and Metro can work effectively together. Among other things, the City wishes to work with Metro to: Whisner Metro Letter February 15, 2011 Page Two • Participate early in any discussions relating to service level changes and new service alternatives. • Participate early in any discussions relating to service during and, then, after construction of the 520 Project. • Identify new opportunities for long-term service to, from and through the City. • Involve its Citizens in the process ... and use public transportation. The City of Clyde Hill looks forward to hearing back from Metro with suggestions as to how the City and Metro can better work together. Please contact Mitch Wasserman, City Administrator, with your thoughts. Very truly yours, ,a George S. Martin Mayor cc.
